HGVs are increasingly using the A343 even though it’s not suitable for them and people often hoon along the road at ridiculous speeds. The result is danger and disruption through the suburbs of Newbury, Berkshire in Richard Benyon’s constituency; Highclere, Hurstbourne Tarrant and Enham Alamein in my constituency; and Middle Wallop in Caroline Nokes’ constituency. I have tried to persuade the Department for Transport to improve signage to discourage this, but to no avail. Theonly other option is to apply to have to the road de-designated as an A road, making it a B road, which would allow for more traffic calming measures to be introduced and hopefully remove it from a lot of satnav routes too. I have written to Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, to see if we can make some progress and get the traffic on the A34 and A303 where it belongs.
