The wars of the first decade of this century gave new relevance to Remembrance Day, colliding images of desert camouflage with the poppy’s muddy home on the Flanders fields. This year however has brought the First World War and its tragedies back into the light of history’s gaze. The centenary of the Battle of the Somme this summer gives today particular resonance.

Thousands of service men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live safe and free and we should all pay homage to their memory.
